Too much of swaras
SWARA RENDERING should be economical to be effective. It was in excess of this in Jayanti Mohan's concert.
After a long and final round of short and speedy swaras earning the inevitable applause in Papanasam Sivan's "Thamadhamen" (Todi) at the pallavi, mridangist Ramakrishnan was preparing for the tani avartanam when the vocalist waved to violinst Akkarai Subbulakshmi to render another round of swaras which might not have been necessary.
The Ramamanohari alapana was long and laboured Akkarai's play was more pointed for Dikshitar's "Matangi Srirajarajeswari Mamava" which was however well rendered with correct diction.
"Mayamma" (Ahiri- Syama Sastry) "Edayyaggathi" (Chalanata - Koteswara Aiyar), Kavadichindu and Jayadeva's Ashtapadi added spice to the recital.
Classy Devamanohari
With skilful articulation, Mysore Nagamani Srinath who has a sweet and malleable voice churned out rare idioms and phrases. Her Devamanohari alapana was classy and Vasudevachar's ``Palukavademira'' was sung (without omitting the composer's chittaswarams) in style at the Asthika Samajam, Thiruvanmiyur. A comprehensive alapana in Pantuvarali for ``Ennaganu Ramabhajana'', ``Elavatara''(Mukhari-Tyagaraja), two Dasar kritis and her own tillana in Revati deserve special mention. The artiste's frequent reference to her notebook, however, was not a pleasing sight.
Usha Rajagopalan's supportive role was commendable. Mannarkoil J. Balaji (mridangam) and A. S. Krishnan (morsing) presented an interesting tani avartanam.
