Riotous colours of terracotta
HEMA SUNDARAM'S rainbow-hued terracotta forms bring riotous colours to a niche exhibition of Terracotta Pottery currently being held at the Vimonisha Art Gallery.
Crafted out of a special mix of clay, found in the Villupuram and Vridhachalam districts of Tamil Nadu and in Jaipur, are a range of distinctive urns, pots, lamp stands, animal forms, laughing Buddhas, Ganeshas and so on. The terracotta concepts and formats include Mexican and Grecian-inspired pots, miniature-sized `matkas', flower vases and serrated candle stands as well as artefacts in varying shapes and sizes.
The human visages and forms sculpted on the urns give a dramatic touch to the terracotta collection, with facial expressions ranging from bizarre or happy to `business as usual'! The geometric etchings on the urns impress with their artistry while the beige darkening into black `matka' pots are singularly attractive.
The USP of the terracotta collection though are the vibrant colours, running a gamut through red, mauve, ultramarine blue, orange and nut brown to all the shades of the earth. There are red laughing Buddhas, turmeric-coloured animals and compelling Ganeshas bathed in most colours of the spectrum.
Hema's `Hamsam' terracotta collection which forms part of the repertoire concludes tomorrow (June 22) at Vimonisha Art Gallery, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, off Nungambakkam High Road, Chennai.
