Exclusive presentation is better
THE VEENA concert of Revathy Krishna under the auspices of TTD Information Centre was a mix of light devotionals and pure Carnatic music. Under the latter category, the Nattai Pancharatna, ``Jagadaanandakaraka,'' invoked an atmosphere of divinity in tune with the TTD Centre's environment. In a similar vein were the other Carnatic music items, ``Om! Namo Narayana'' in Karnaranjani, ``Govardhana-Gireesam'' (Hindolam) ``Sri Venkatagireesam'' (Surati) neatly rendered. The main thrust of the Carnatic music part was the Pantuvarali raga alapana crisply presented, followed by the song ``Raghuvara-nannu.'' The familiarity of these songs contributed much to the appreciation of those sections of the audience devoted purely to Carnatic music. Set against the light variety, Carnatic music lovers experienced a sense of composure on hearing those songs.
There is the confrontation between Carnatic music and light music, evident in recent times. To some extent, musicians have resolved this dilemma by watertight compartmentalisation of exclusive Carnatic music concerts without including any light music items they have sung. Such an exclusive arrangement enables the listeners to attend whichever suits their taste. Revathy Krishna too could have resorted to this dichotomy of performing pattern. The ambience of the performing venue has also to be taken into consideration as what to play where.
Revathy Krishna, for the Carnatic music part was accompanied on the mridangam by Madipakkam Suresh with softness and grit. For the light music, she had Manikandan on the keyboard and Santhanam on the tabla. SVK
