Good in parts

SANKARABHARANAM RAGA has many pleasing phrases and refined idioms. If these had been used in a planned manner with an eye on brevity (it was a concert of less than two hours) and a little more care to sruti, Mohan Santhanam could have produced an exquisite alapana.

In the event what resulted was an alapana, which shone in patches. His rendering of Tyagaraja's `Emineramo' was clean and the neraval at the charanam, "Deenabanduvani Devadevudani... " was well conceived.

While the initial swaras were quite impressive the final rounds fell into the clap-winning slot, with violinist Melakkaveri Thiagarajan and mridangist Bhuvaraghavan in full `co-operation.'

The concert held at the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan (mini hall) was under the auspices of Kartik Fine Arts.

Mohan Santhanam's Dhanyasi alapana as also Papanasam Sivan's "Balakrishna, Tandurul" (Nasikabhoosani — Koteeswara Aiyar), "Dayanidhe" (Begada — Syama Sastry), "Makelara Vicharamu" (Ravichandrika — Tyagaraja) were included in the programme, which was well drawn. — K.S.
