A memorable evening
IT WAS a celebration in the true sense of the word. Because everyone, right from the smallest to the oldest, were involved to make the event very spiritual and meaningful. The flaws were ignored and egos put aside as art and artistes forged together to recall the start of an institution 32 years ago the anniversary of Shree Bharatalaya at the Narada Gana Sabha on July 7, where flowers, incense, music and dance made it a memorable evening.
``Natya Devo Bhavah" began with devotionals rendered by the children and prayers. ``Nartana Arpanam" by all the students, in rusts, blacks and greens, was charmingly choreographed (Priya Murle). Release of the book Laghu Bharatam (Vol 111) and presentation of the awards to those rendering yeoman service in the field of fine arts, took up a huge part of the evening. Justice P. R. Gokulakrishnan, President, Tamil Isai Sangam, presided and also released the book with Anita Ratnam receiving the first copy. L. Sabaretnam, Chairman, Kartik Fine Arts and Director, IOC, N. Gopalaswamy, Secretary, Department Of Culture, joined the other dignitaries in felicitating Sudha Rani on her achievements and contribution to the field of dance. Those honoured on the occasion included Radhika Surjeet, Surya Krishnamoorthy, R.Visweswaran, K. R. Radhakrishana, Krishnakumari Narendran, Kausalya Raman, Dr. Ramaratnam, Janardhanan, Sreenivasan S. Janaki, Anantapadmanaban, R. Natarajan and Sukanya.
Sudha Rani, in a sensitive gesture of appreciation of her students' efforts, had them garlanded. Natya Vyuham, choreographed by Anita Ratnam, was eye-catching. The dancers (Aruna Subbaiah, Gayatri Ramaratnam, Prabha Dixit), in yellow and black, were a good foil for the grey background with the deity in the middle. With all the music being composed by Madurai N. Krishnan, the other support was rendered by Nandini Anand on the vocals, Priya Murle, Padma S. Raghavan and N. Sasirekha, on the nattuvangam, S. Vijayraghavan on the violin, Aniruddha on the mridangam (who also was responsible for the lyrics and jathis). The evening also had the peppy Revathy Sankharan lending her own inimitable touch to compering, just as the video people provided annoying intrusion with their bright lights right in the middle of the proceedings.
