Cool khadi for hot Chennai

Beautifully sculpted.

A KHADI and Handicrafts Exhibition-cum-sale is currently being held at Sri Sankara Hall, 267 TTK Road, Alwarpet, in connection with the Kamaraj Centenary Celebrations. The focus of the exhibition, which is being organised by Khadi Gaamodyog Bhavan, is on khadi products being produced in rural centres along with handcrafted items from all over India.

Kurtas in white and soft colours for men and women are the prime attraction of the khadi section. Well-tailored, white khadi shirts for men offer cool solutions toChennai's year-long summer. `Bandgala' shirts thatteam up with khadi dhoties are another favourite, along with pretty khadi cotton saris in striking combinations.

Thin absorbent towels, jacquard bedspreads and bed sheets are also on display. The khadi items display good quality but need a lot of innovative design inputs to make them sell fast .

The handcrafted items span the gamut from white metal icons and artefacts from Jodhpur to Kashmir's walnut wood furniture and Saharanpur's copper inlay `jaali' work screens, furniture and artefacts.

A new entrant to the Khadi Gramodyog-sponsored handicraft exhibition is the well-sculpted, white wood items and figures from Rajasthan. They feature large-sized elephants, Ganeshas, Krishnas and other Gods.

Huge gunmetal items from Hyderabad, though a trifle crude, are a great draw. Those who are looking for attractive handcrafted gifts, the exhibition offers marble dust figures from Dharwar, delicately crafted pith temples, brass vases and artefacts from Moradabad, gem stone paintings from Rajasthan, lovely metal `uralis' and a lot more besides. The artefacts are also reasonably priced. The exhibition concludes on July 15.
