Promising talent
VDS ARTS Academy's Talent Revealing Opportunity programme offers an excellent platform to aspiring youngsters. M. Anupama, already ranked among the top 10 artistes by the Academy, had another opportunity to present a vocal concert last week.
Fortunately Anupama has not allowed herself to be caught up in the recent trend of `speed' music or briga-laden singing. She took her time developing the raga while singing the alapana; thanks to a proper tempo in rendering the Kritis the words were pronounced clearly. Anupama began her concert with the Varnam in Charukesi, a composition by Lalgudi Jayaraman and concluded it with his Tillana in Kamas. This was followed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar's ``Rajagopalam." The rather longish segment of kalpanaswaras seemed tutored and not quite spontaneous.
After ``Nenarunchinanu" in Malavi, Anupama took up the alapana of Varali; it is perhaps a little too early in her musical career to attempt such difficult ragas.
Due to the vocalist's high shruti, the violin sounded rather shrill, but Arunachal Karthik did a commendable job both in raga elaboration and kalpanaswaras. Krishna Prakash on the mridangam gave very good support too, apart from a decent Thani.
