Well-planned concert

SCHEDULING IS important for the success of a concert and if Savitha Narasimhan's concert at Kala Kendra received an encore, it was because of her good planning. She must have deliberately chosen Arunachala Kavirayar's "Yaro Ivar Yaro" for her comprehensive Bhairavi alapana - (the choice in the current trend is either "Balagopala" (Dikshitar) or any of Tyagaraja kritis and neraval and swaras at "Chandra Bimba Mukha... " The madhyama kala swaras at "Saha Pandita Samodra Sevyam" for the Purvikalyani kriti, "Padmavathi Ramanan" (Oothukadu Venkata Kavi - Misra chapu) were evocative. "Narimani," a javali in Kamatch by Dharmapuri Subbarayar, and a tillana penned by her guru Chitravina Ravikiran in Hamsanadam deserve special mention. Akkarai Subbulakshmi (violin) excelled in the raga alapanas hitting the core instantly and resourceful answers in the swara duels. Kallidaikurichi Sivakumar (mirdangam) impressed with his melodic beats.
