Soul-stirring swaras
LISTENERS HAD an exhilarating anubhava in the concert of Viji Krishnan and Sriram Krishnan (violin duet) under the auspices of Nada Inbam, for rarely the performing level of a youngster is at the peak of excellence right through. It is their patrimony and what a patrimony at that being the daughter and son of the melodic maestro in T. N. Krishnan.
The rasikas were treated to the rare pleasure of the flow and flowering of music from the moment their bows touched the strings. Refinement of music culture cannot be precisely defined, but certainly can be sensed from the expressive exaltation of an artiste. That was the picture Viji and Sriram presented.
In raga delineation of Poorvikalyani, Ritigowla, Yadukulakambhoji and Todi they took with them the avid listeners along blissful pathways. The alapanas were shared by Viji and Sriram, each phrasing from one inspiring the other to play another more glowing. It was rather difficult to point out which raga was sublime, for each raga exposition brimmed with its characteristic bewitching sancharas. The melody of Ritigowla and Yadukulakambhoji in particular was mesmeric. There was not a trace of anything rehearsed at home being recited on the platform, but was spontaneously stirring. The softness of the sancharas, the silences between them and the tender taperings lacing them sprinkled fragrance on the ragas. In Ritigowla they mused on its engagingly luring aspects and the kirtana, "Janani Ninnu Vina" was monarchic. The Yadukulakambhoji stole the show with sukha bhava dripping from every note. "Hechchariga-ka Rara" hailed their reverential rendering. The cutcheri started with the Bhairavi "Viriboni" varnam followed by "Vatapi Ganapatim" with cascades of swaras. The other items were "Gnanamusagarada" (Poorvikalyani) "Evarani" (Devamritavarshani) "Brova Bharama" (Bahudari) and Ragam, Tanam and Pallavi in Todi. In Mannargudi Easwaran's mridangam accompaniment, the spectacle of seductive beats went hand in glove with the charming violin notes. One could feel the deep delicacy of his play shedding radiance on laya support with rippling rhythm.
Vaikom Gopalakrishnan (ghatam) in his own way exchanged notes with Mannargudi Easwaran.
