Overdose of narration
GETTING AWAY from the Krishna Gana Sabha activities, one was treated to the recital of Sarayu Sai, disciple of Chitra Visweswaran, at the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan Kala Kendra.
The dancer has a composed presence to which she adds good technique.
But, what for this critic was too distracting was the overdose of narrative sequences, all episodic spun into the varnam in Shanmukhapriya "Devar Munivar," a composition of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Barring the "Kalal Alanda Tiruman" line, no part of the sahitya called for a full story telling enactment of Narasimharoopa or of Draupadi Vastraapaharanam. Does an interpretation of the musical line have to take on a narrative form so often?
And the other factor, which seemed overdone, was the frenetic mridangam playing, ornamenting even the abhinaya passages.
Surely primacy of the dance has to be kept in view instead of cluttering the performance with too many orchestral frills, though Vanati Raghuraman sang tunefully and Subhashri provided efficient nattuvangam support. Ambujam Krishna's "Shambho Mahadeva" in Bauli though neat, fell short of communicating the power of Siva.
