Lilting swaras
T. S. SATHYAVATI, a Karnataka based artiste well known for her lucid discourses in Sanskrit, gave a good account of herself at the Music Academy in her morning concert on December 16.
She presented a fluent version of Tiruvarur Ramaswamy Pillai's ``Jagadeeswari" in Mohanam that is adorned with a lilting chittaswara sahitya.
The Mukari delineation was not without merit, yet it somehow did not strike a listening chord. Savithri Sathyamurthi on the violin was effective in conveying the singular nuances of the raga.
``Sangeetha Sastra gnanamu" by Tyagaraja which emphasises that music, as practised by Tyagaraja, is capable of conferring on the devotee, the bliss of sarupya, meaning to attain the same form as the worshipped was a neat interpretation.
The expansion of the lyrical sequence ``Prema Bhakti Sujana" and the kalpanaswaras although slightly surfeit for a rakthi-oriented melody were competent and confident renderings.
Thanjavur Subramaniam (mridangam), K. V. S. S. Mani (Kanjira) and Somayajulu, who made a favourable impression on the ghatam, were the members of the very supportive percussion team.
