Lively jugalbandi
HAMSADHWANI COMMENCED this year's series with a jugalbandhi by Kalpana Venkat (violin) and Sivaramakrishnan (sitar) along with Nagai Narayanan (mridangam) and Ganesh Rao (tabla). Although perfect blending of the violin and sitar could not be achieved, the perfect understanding displayed by both the artistes made the concert lively.
The varnam, "Amma Ananda Dayini" in raga Gambhiranattai composed by Dr. Balamuralikrishna, though short, was well rendered with various swara patterns. The raga Pantuvarali, and tanam played by KalpanaVenkat, and the equivalent Pourya Dhanasri played by Sivaramakrishnan in their own inimitable style was pleasing. Although the Pallavi with 8 beats (adi talam) lacked sahitya, kalpanaswaras with permutation combinations made the rendering of the piece an enjoyable one. The percussionists stole the show by their excellent konnakkol and bhol rendered in between their soft finger play on the mridangam and tabla.
A melodious bhajan in Yamunakalyani concluded the concert.
The noteworthy feature of Shoba Sekhar's concert was her clear diction in all the compositions. Mayamalavagowla ("Vidulagu") occupied the central place in the concert with good neraval and kalpanaswraras in "Kamalagowri".
The brigas could have been improved while delineating the raga, and the avoidance of the hurried rendering of the piece excluding the Pallavi would have made the kriti more appealing. A well rendered raga Vijayasree ("Neelayathakshi") captivated the audience. Padma Shankar displayed good talent as an accompanying violinist. The mridangam tani by K. Srivatsa was adequate.
Bold attempt
Janani Ganesh has a good voice and with assiduous practice, more experience and exposure, she can blossom into a good artiste. "Gam Ganapathe" (Hamsadhwani), "Anuragamule" (Saraswathi), "Bhajaremanasa" (Abheri) and "Mahitapravruddha" (Kambhoji) were rendered with enthusiasm. Elaboration of raga Todi with its intricate nuances is not easy. Her handling of the raga and the kriti, "Kaddanuvariki" was a bold attempt although it lacked depth.
Neraval `addampu' and subsequent swaras were average. Anusha on the violin and S. Sankaran on the mridangam provided adequate support.
Perfect harmony
Perfect harmony and understanding between the vocal duo Uma and Geetha made the concert successful. "Akhilandeswari" (Dwijawanti) in Chowkakalam and "Ramachandram" (Vasantha) in Durithakalam with brisk swaraprastharas were well rendered. Aesthetically sung Kalyani raga followed by "Bhajare Re Chitha" with kalpanaswaras made a good impact on the audience.
In "Neevanti" (Todi), well patterned neraval "Saregu" followed by imaginative korvaiswaras with panchamam as arudi was enjoyable. "Arulseyya" in Rasikapriya became `rasika's priya'. Tiruvarur N. Balam on the violin gave an excellent account of her ability to match the main artiste's talent.
K. Ramakrishnan proved his mettle on the mridangam in the tani.
