Suddhadanyasi well-handled
THE MUSIC season started off well for Parthasarathy Swami Sabha with Vijay Venkateshwar's vichitraveena recital that opened with Dikshitar's ``Sri Mahaganapathi" (Gowla). Madhyamakala Kalpanaswaras (Prakasa Karo) in Tisranadai were catchy. The Prayogam of Da ma da ni sa should not have found a place in the otherwise melodious playing of Nayaki raga (Ranganayakam). A brisk rendering of ``Krupajoo" (Chayatharangini), ``Inthanuthsu" (Guntakriya) kept up the tempo of the concert. Elaborate rendition of the raga Suddha Dhanyasi with embellishing sancharas in Mandra, Madhyamasthayis and short avartana kalpanaswaras in both speeds in ``Sri Parthasarathy" were noteworthy. But the absence of more Sangathis in the quick presentation of this Krithi was noticeable. Since the concert dwelt mainly on Dikshitar and Tyagaraja Krithis, the selection could have included one or two other ``Vaggeyakaras."
The screeching and jarring sound whilst playing in higher octaves should be avoided. C.V. Chandrasekaran was a good match for the main artiste with his deft fingering on the violin.
Precision and good rhythm marked the support provided by C. Narendran on the mridangam throughout the concert including Thani.
Since the opening varnam comprised a korvai of swaras especially in charanam, the Manodharmaswaras for ``Karunimpa" (Sahana) came as an overdose in the veena concert of Jayashree Arvind. The artiste settled down well in the rendering of Sankari (Begada) which was preceded by two krithis.
Her Vidwat in Raga elaboration was evident both in Lathangi (``Aparadhamu") and Karaharapriya (Rama nee Samaana).
Niraval and Kalpanaswaras rendered with ease in ``Vegananu" in Aparadhamu and later in ``Rama nee samana" demonstrated her talents. Frequent adjustment of sruthi could have been avoided. The percussion artistes Muralidharan (mridangam) and Radhakrishnan (ghatam) combined well in making a good Thani.
Intricately woven Sankarabharanam raga in ``Enduku Peddalavale" and the Niraval ``Veda Shastra" was the highlight of the vocal concert rendered by Lakshmi Rangarajan.
However considering the weighty kirtana, the well-presented Kalpanaswaras could have been more elaborate to provide adequate balance.
With perfect sruthi alignment, ``Paramathmudu" (Vagadeeswari) rendered with bhavam won audience's appreciation.
The selection of krithis ``Ekamresa" (Shanmukhapriya) and Samodam (Udaya Ravichandrika) with raga rendition testified her scholarship in good patanthara under the tutelage of T.M.T. V.V.S. Murari (violin) deserves special mention for his deft handling of all the ragas with ease.
However, he should pay more attention to Eduppu in the kalpanaswaras. Manoj Siva (mridangam) and K. V. Gopalakrishnan (Kanjira) blended very well and excelled in their Thani in Sankarabharanam.
``Bhaja Bhaja Manasa" (Sindhu Bhairavi) came as a fitting finale to the concert.
