Enticing alapana

ON THE last day of the Thirupoonthuruthy Sri Narayana Thirtha's Namasankeerthana Tharangam festival on December 11, at Sringeri Pravachana Mandir, Maharajapuram S. Ramachandran's recital had an enticing alapana in Hamir Kalyani.

He followed it up with the tarangam, "Kshehmam Guru Gopala'' which is commonly sung in Mohanam. Earlier, the tarangam, "Jaya Jaya Ramanatha" was sung in the correct raga — Nattai. The concluding tarangam, "Dhrikshyami" was sung in Madhyamavati, a correct raga.

Felicitating the singer, Thirupoonthuruthy V. Venkatesan, Managing Trustee, referred to raga Mohanam, and said Ramachandran could have sung in this raga instead of Hamirkalyani. Ramachandran agreed to sing in Mohanam in the future. While the change in ragas might be condoned, Bhushani Kalyana Raman's inclusion of Dikshitar's "Sri Kantimati" in Hemavati in her programme was rightly presented by devotees of Narayanathirtha.

The festival concluded with a Harikatha on Vatsala Kalyanam by T. R. Kamala Murthy and the Anjaneya Uthsavam Mangalam.

Birudu for Kalyanaraman

In recognition of his sustained work to propagate Namasankeertanam, the G. K. Foundation Trust has decided to award Udayalur K. Kalyanarama Bagavathar the birudhu, "Namasankeertana Ratna" on December 25, at Srinivasa Sastri Hall.

Artistes from the U.S., Mumbai and Chennai will take part in a five-day music festival (December 28, 2002 - January 1, 2003). _ KSR
