Thrilled by the recognition
Mini Mathur, Chinappa and Cyrus Brocha.
NIKHIL CHINAPPA has a wacky sense of humour. The MTV VJ, who continues to make the hearts of teenyboppers flutter even after five years, has just added another feather to his colourful cap.
He has been chosen the Best Presenter at the recent Indian Television Academy Awards. "Boy, am I thrilled! I was in the middle of a rocking party when this call came... and I thought it was a joke. I must admit it is encouraging to get such an award," exclaimed the presenter of such programmes as "MTV Select", during a telephonic conversation.
Having walked this earth for a mere 25 years, Nikhil says his life's been a series of happy accidents. Being a music buff suited Nikhil fine and he took to radio jockeying like fish to water. "My first love is and will always be radio," declares the 25-year old architecture student from Bangalore.
The chocolate-faced VJ, who worships music "in any form", has already hit the silver screen with "Snip", the English film also starring Sophiya Haque, and will soon star in a bi-lingual project, though he's tight-lipped about the details.
"All that it takes to make a good VJ/DJ is to possess superb communication skills and have the ability to laugh at oneself. If you can connect with your audience, then you're on." He also believes that reading makes all the difference.
He idolises fellow VJ Mike Kasem for his wry wit and sense of humour. His favourite actors? "Ummm... well, I don't have any favourites. I admire certain performances of some stars." Nikhil admits he has an adventurous streak in him. This has led him to try everything at least once, from trekking and white water rafting to camping. "I have a policy... to do things I've never done before. Now I dream of owning a radio station!" Maybe Nikhil will some day.
