Diamond jubilee celebrations

GOING BY the Hindu calendar, Sri Sankara Math at Kanchipuram informed devotees that the "Ninth Annual Aradhana of Jeevan Mukta and Parabrahmaswaroopi, the 68th Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Mahaswamigal would be performed at the Brindavan at Srimatam complex on December 30, 2002." A five-day long celebration to mark the event commenced on December 26. The present illustrious successors of the Sage of Kanchi, His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal and His Holiness Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal are so gracious to ask the devotees who come to the Srimatam to also visit the site of the Satabdhi Mani Mantapam in Orirukkai, 5 km from Kanchipuram on the Uthiramerur road, a marathon project sponsored by the Sri Sri Sri Mahalakshmi Mathrubutheswarar (SSSMM) Trust and supported mainly by donations from humble devotees all over the country and the world. (websites www.Manimantapam.org & www.Jayajayasankara.org give the latest details of this ongoing project). Preservation of India's Vedic heritage was dear to the Sage of Kanchi and towards that end, His Holiness founded the Veda Dharma Sastra Paripalana Sabha in 1942 with headquarters in Kumbakonam and centres in different parts of the country.

This Sabha has ever since been rendering yeoman service in the direction of creating an awareness among the public, of the richness of our Vedic culture by conducting Veda sammelans in different places from time to time. Completing 60 years of fruitful and effective service in 2002, the Sabha celebrated the Diamond Jubilee throughout the year by holding Sammelans in various centres in Chennai and other places.

The conclusion of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations is being held in front of the sacred precincts of the Mahaswamigal's Adhishtanam in the Sri Matam complex in Kanchipuram from January 4 to 7. The highlight of the event is Chaturveda Parayanam by 60 Vedic scholars (15 for each Veda). As usual on the first three days, there will be Veda Parayanam in the forenoon and afternoon and lectures on Dharma Sastras in the evening. The crowning event will be the function on the afternoon of January 7, when Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi will deliver the valedictory address.

Each Vedic scholar will be honoured with a shawl and half a sovereign of gold. At 6.30 a.m. on January 4, the picture of Sri Veda Vyasa will be taken in a procession, an event which the Mahaswami always desired to hold to show the great debt we owe to Sri Veda Vyasa for the preservation of our culture.

Justice T. S. Arunachalam Iyer will deliver the inaugural address at 8 a.m. and the vote of thanks will be proposed by Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan.

Mr. V. Narayanaswamy, city organiser, Veda Dharma Paripalana Sabha at Adarsh Apartment, `Gokul', F-3, Door No. 69/45, 7th Avenue, Ashok Nagar, Chennai-600083 (Ph: 24898258) will be pleased to answer all enquiries about the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and contributions.
