Clear and confident
WITH A feeble voice, Gayatri Sathya showed her potential by singing with confidence and clarity. Thyagaraja's ``Dayaleni Brathukemi" (Nayaki) and ``Balakanakamaya" (Atana) were impressive. Shanmukhapriya (also known as Chamaram) raga alapana was followed by Dikshithar's ``Ekamresa Nayike" with good neraval and swara passages for ``Kanchi Nagara Nivasini." The Madhyamavathi alapana contained meaningful phrases and Thyagaraja's ``Rama Katha" was rendered attractively, with satisfying neraval for ``Baamaamani" and kalpanaswaras.
Kailasam gave good violin support, playing characteristic phrases in Shanmukhapriya and Madhyamavathi. Delhi Ramasubramaniam gave able mridangam support.
Nathamuni Gayatri, who performed for Karthik fine Arts, has a strong voice base and her approach is traditional and satisfactory. Some more effort in voice modulation will be more effective. ``Vinayakuni' (Hamsadwani) was well rendered with kalpanaswaras, followed by Thyagaraja's Kapi raga Kirtana, ``Meevalla Guna Doshamemi." After a fairly detailed alapana of Simhendramadhyamam, Vasudevachar's ``Ninne Nammithinayya" was sung well. While the swara exercises in Chowka Kala were elegantly done, the swaras in Dhuritha Kala proved clumsy, with a few lapses in arriving at the proper idam. The artiste seems capable of correcting such errors by paying more attention to the laya aspects. Kalpana Ramani gave able violin support. Good percussion support on mridangam was given by Umayalpuram Kalyanaraman, who played an interesting tani avarthanam in Misra chapu.
Yogam Santhanam showed her skills in good rendition of raga alapanas and elegant handling of the kirtanas. Her voice power appeared feeble on a few occasions when there was a little struggle for clear expression. The Bhairavi Ata tala varnam, Muthaiya Bhagavathar's ``Gum Ganapathe" in Hamsadwani, Tyagaraja's ``Manasa Etulorthune" (Malayamarutham) and ``Saramegani" (Panthuvarali) were handled well.
The Hindolam raga essay and the kirtana, ``Chintayami Jagadamba" were impressive. Seasoned violinist Usha Rajagopal provided excellent accompaniment playing beautiful raga phrases and answers to swara passages. Manakkal Sriram provided able mridangam support and played a brisk tani in Adi tala.
