On traditional lines
ACCOMPANIED BY Bhagyalakshmi (violin) and Erode Nagarajan (mridangam) Geetha Sundaresan, a devout student of Tyagaraja and engaged in propagating the saint's ideals in Muscat, is a seasonal visitor to Chennai. In her R. R. Sabha concert, she began with a Sriraga varnam and followed it up with "Ganapatemahamate" (Kalyani _ Dikshitar) and Tyagaraja's "Shobillu" (Jaganmohini). The Todi alapana went on traditional lines. So did the kriti, "Kaddanuvariki" with neraval and swaras at the charanam line, "Paddutappaka... "
Dikshithar's "Ekamberesa" (Shanmukhapriya), Thooran's "Konjikonjiva Guhane" (Kamatch) were handled well. Following a ragamalika vrittam in Kambodi, Simhendramadhyamam, Hindolam and Behag, Geetha sang Gopalakrishna Bharathi's charming "Idudano Tillai".
Professional touch
Although an amateur, Geetha Krishnamoorthy lends a professional touch to her veena recital. Alapanas are comprehensive and meticulously rendered. There are no unnecessary gimmicks or speculative sancharas. The entire exercise is on traditional lines.
All the nuances of Kalyani were to the fore in the alapana. This was followed by tanam (most necessary in a veena recital) in ragamalika Kanada, Hindola, Valachi and Revati. Tyagaraja's "Nidhichala" was taken up for a detailed expose with neraval and swaras at the charanam line, "Mamata Bandhanayuta". The other songs played were "Ninne Bhajana", (Nattai _Tyagaraja), "Subramanyana", (Suddha Dhanyasi Dikshitar), "Apparama Bhakti" (Pantuvarali _ Tyagaraja) and "Nannuvidachi'' (Ritigowla _ Tyagaraja).
The recital concluded with Tirupanandal Pattabiramayya's javali, "Apaduruku" in enticing Kamatch. Kalakkad Srinivasan (mridangam) and N. Rajaraman (ghatam) played a quick tani towards the close.
Commendable zest
Although lacking in concert opportunities, especially in Chennai, the cultural centre of Carnatic music, Yazhpanam Karunakaran showed commendable zest in his well-programmed concert at R. R. Sabha.
Vachaspati alapana for Swati Tirunal's "Pahijagajanani" with swaras at the pallavi which followed another well executed Suddha Dhanyasi alapana for Dikshitar's "Sri Parthasarathina", Ramaswamy Sivan's "Nikela Dayaradu" (Sarasangi) "Vasudeva Varaguna", a Tyagaraja Divyanama keerthane in Sanskrit (Bilahari) and "Saramegani" (Pantuvarali _ Tyagaraja) deserve special mention.
Karunakaran sang a number of Tamil devotionals, including Surajananda's "Anumanai" and a Tiruppugal in Desh. The Revati tillana was another piece, which registered. Veteran violinist Thiruvaroor Balam embellished alapanas by the vocalist with a few rare touches.
Umayalpuram Kalyana Raman (mridangam), with his loud and clear beats, and R. Ravichandran (ghatam) played an exciting tani.
