Samprokshanam
THE ASHTABANDANA Mahasamprokshanam of the 800-year-old Sri Sundara Varadaraja Perumal temple in Virugambakkam, will be performed between 7.30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Sunday (August 31). The temple is situated on the road to Koyambedu from Virugambakkam. According to legend the place was called Vidhurapuri as Vidhura, younger brother of Dhritharashtra and Pandu, stayed here. The temple was once famous for Garuda Sevai. Due to long years of neglect the temple also got dilapidated. It was decided to renovate the temple and a committee was formed to take care of the work.
The entire structure was pulled down and Balalayam was established in 1984. It took 14 years to complete the renovation because funds were scarce. However, new shrines for the presiding deity, Sundara Varadaraja Perumal, Perundevi Thayar, Andal, Chakkarathazhwar, Anjaneya, Garudan and Vinayaka have been built with munificent donations from devotees. As part of the Mahasamprokshanam function, the Moolavar idol has been taken out of the Balalayam and placed in the Mandapam at the entrance. There will be Nithya Homam on all the days till Sunday when the Mahasamprokshanam will be performed. The Lord, with His Consorts, mounted on Sesha Vahanam, will be taken in a procession on Sunday night.
