Welfare facility at Thirupoonthuruthy
Sri Narayana Tirtha Tarangini Mahal at Thirupoonthuruthy.
THE OPENING of Sri Narayana Tirtha Tarangini Mahal at Thirupoonthuruthy on the Gokulashtami day marked yet another milestone in the history of the Thirupoonthuruthy Sri Narayana Tirtha Trust which celebrated the 11th Gokulashtami Tarangam festival on August 18 and 19 at the holy shrine of the saint composer.
Tarangini Mahal is a self-contained community centre with a large-sized hall complete with a kitchen. The place may be used to conduct not only Bhajans and discourses but marriages, receptions and other welfare-related community functions at a reasonable cost. It thus fulfils a long-felt need of the residents of this remote village.
The Mahal was declared opened by A. Ramji, former general manager, Indian Railways, and a patron of the Trust at a brief function, presided over by R. Krishnaswamy, Secretary of the Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai.
A special feature of the "Taranga Anjali" programme this year was the rendering of many rarely-sung tarangams, mostly by young musicia ns. As many as 35 artistes participated in the day-long celebrations.
T. S. Sargunapandian, Senior Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Thanjavur, was the Chief Guest. S. V. Krishnan, founder, Naada Inbam, Chennai, appreciated the efforts of the Trust in popularising tarangam music. V. Narayanan, who inaugurated the festival, spoke about music and the bhakti movement.
Thirupoonthuruthy V. Venkatesan, Managing Trustee, proposed the vote of thanks.
