Feast for the mind and spirit

Amudam Music Private Limited - Carnatic Classical - Tamil Maalai - Sudha Raghunathan - Price - Rs. 55.

AMUDAM MUSIC has brought out an audio album, of exclusively Tamil songs rendered by Sudha Raghunathan, perhaps, the most sought after artiste in the contemporary Carnatic classical scenario. The Gambheera Naatai krithi of Swami Shanthananda Bhavananda, "Gnana Vinayakane," that has been a favourite of many musicians for many years makes for an auspicious start.

Muthuthandavar's "Sevikavendumaaiyah" that was previously sung in Abhogi, however gained popularity only through the Andolika version, that used to frequently figure in the concerts of the legendary G. N. Balasubramaniam. A traditional ragamalika on Madurai Meenakshi with Ananda Bhairavi, Kamas and Bhoopalam (sporting a sadharana gandharam), adorning the lyrics, and Kalki's "Poonguyil Koovum" in Kaapi are a compendium of melody.

Yazhpanam Veera Mani Iyer's Maandu song on Murugan, "Lalitha Navarathna Maalai" in Hamsadhwani, Suddha Saveri, Dhanyasi, Malayamarutham, Amrithavarshini, Saveri, Ranjani and Surrati leave the rasika in a comfortable zone.

Subramania Bharathi's "Chandiran Oliyil" in Chandrakauns has a sprightly gait, while Gopalakrishna Bharathiyar's "Ayye Meththa Kadinam" in ragas Punnagavarali, Nadanamakriya, Brindavana Saaranga and Senjurrutti in the slower tempo, has a salutary listening effect.

Maharajapuram Santhanam's thillana in Basant Bahaar, that gave the stamp on his composing versatility, is sung with enthusiastic fervour. The Tamil vrittam of Ramalinga Swamigal in Poorvikalyani, Sahana and Madhyamavati, and the concluding Tirupuggazh also in Madhyamavati prove that success is never an accident; it is a culmination of commitment, ceaseless endeavour and also a kindly providence.

Vishnu Devananda Charitable Trust - 002Y03A/B Compact Discs - Rim Jhim Devotional Hymns Bhakthi Lahari - Seetha Narayanan - Price: Not indicated.

Vishnu Devananda Charitable Trust, in association with Music Today, has launched a series of bhajan CDs and cassettes sung by Seetha Narayanan, an accomplished Carnatic musician and guru, well recognised for her bhava-oriented devotional music. In these two albums, Seetha has rendered as many as 22 devotional hymns with full-throated articulation and a singular, rich resonance that makes compulsive listening.

Each song has a brief introduction, explaining the meaning, and how the various composers of the bhakti movement have with a wealth of devotion and imagination, composed these songs, not for any material benefit, but as a sure means to attain salvation.

The songs of Tulsidas, Meera, Surdas, Kabirdas, Purandaradas, Guru Nanak and other great saints, clothed in charming, light melodies seep through the soul and the entire programme is a feast for the mind and spirit.
