Speaking of the salt of life
Anant Art Gallery recently presented Salt of the Earth, an exhibition of sculptures and vessels by sculptor Latika Katt. A gold medalist in art from Banaras Hindu University, she has been presenting solo exhibitions since 1975 at various galleries in India and other countries like the U.K, Germany and the U.S. among others, besides group shows in India and abroad. The veteran is an awardee from the Lalit Kala Academy, AIFACS and has also been honoured as one of the five distinguished women of Baroda.
The work displayed at the recent show included bronzes, ceramics, papier mache and bamboo works.
Adaughter of a botanist, Latika explains, "I was always interested in organic life, marbles, insect life, honeybees and the like. My work takes inspiration from all the natural things, like a cloud, sand dunes and even a growing bud. I like to work inside of the hard material, and that is what I have portrayed in my work." Although she admits that human figures least inspire her, currently she is working on a 19- foot Indira Gandhi sculpture to be installed in Hyderabad, she reveals.
As regards her work, her landscapes delight in surfaces that dully shine through dolomite white marbles and the like. Her work is also inspired by various aerial views and one of them includes deforested lands, which depicts her deep feelings. Besides, a sculpture of the Iraq War actually takes one to the battleground.
