Poetry with pots

PUSHPA CHARI

Earthen pots, created by Ramu Velar, are on display at Dakshinachitra.

AESTHETICALLY TERRACOTTA: Rough and burnished.

Master potter Ramu Velar's clay of joy - mixed with red earth and sand - brings for you the beautiful poetry of earthen pots. In various shapes, textures and sizes, burnished, rough hewn or polished to mirror like perfection, each of Ramu Velar's terracotta pots symbolises an intuitive understanding of spatial balance and design. Some of them are strewn across the gardens of Dakshinachitra. Many others have been specially created by Ramu Velar for an exhibition of earthen pots currently on at Dakshinachitra, East Coast Road, Muttukadu.

A touch of the Grecian urn, the flowing lines of Mexican pottery, the polish and shape of Mohenjodaro's painted pots, the sturdy forms of rural granary bins: all these seem to find a whisper in the many pots on display at the exhibition.

Of special attraction is a charming garden table. Ramu, potter from Pudukottai, says he is inspired by his traditional roots though he does experiment with embellishments. On view till December 15.
