Cultural fiesta
Beginning September 15, Kalakshetra presents its annual festival of dance and music at its auditorium, Koothambalam. The event begins with an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello" performed by Sadanam Balakrishnan and the International Centre for Kathakali.
In this powerful interpretation, Sadanam Balakrishnan has analysed the nuances of Shakespere's verses translating them into dramatic movement in the Kathakali style.
The music and costumes are in traditional Kathakali form, specially suited to each of Shakespeare's characters.
On September 16, three reputed artistes come together to present `Bhajana Narthanamrutam.'
Choreographed by Sheejith Krishna and composed by O.S. Arun, it tells the story of Rama through bhajans and Bharatanatyam, presented by Suhasini Thomas and Sheejith.
The two dancers take on various characters of the "Ramayana" to bring out the essence of the drama.
For all three artistes, it is a challenge to assume the varied nature of the characters, changing from Rama to Ravana, Sita to Surpanakha, nara (man) to vanara (monkey).
O.S. Arun, Sheejith Krishna, and Suhasini Thomas are highly acclaimed in their fields.
On the final day of the festival, September 17, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan will present a violin concert.
