Last days of the assassin -- Kuppi

SUICIDE SQUAD: Kuppi

Kuppi
Genre: Docu-Drama
Director: A.M.R.Ramesh Cast: Ravi Kale, Malavika, Thara, Ranganath, Nasser and Manju.
Storyline: Follows the trail of Rajiv Gandhi's assassins, especially Sivarasan.
Bottomline: Emotions make it gripping.

Over 15 years after the tragic incident, films based on the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi are hitting theatres, one of them being Kuppi, meaning vial, standing here for the cyanide capsule. The film follows the movement of Sivarasan, known as the one-eyed-Jack, who planned the operation and who was ultimately hunted down by the police.

The film is more a docu-drama with emotions and feelings running high. Made originally in Kannada, the film has been shot in Tamil. Director Ramesh, walking on razor's edge, does not attempt to read the psyche of the assassins. In fact, very little of the killing is shown.

The film starts after the episode, picking up the trail of Sivarasan and his gang following their activities on a daily basis.

The last 21 days of Sivarasan and Subha (another accomplice) do not have interesting incidents but the director has worked on the script, (which is evident in some of the scenes) raising expectations of a sizzling end.

Ravi Kale as Sivarasan has done a good job and the performance of Malavika (of `Anni' fame) as Subha is noteworthy. Ranganath and Thara as the couple, who give refuge to the killers, impress. Another creditable performance comes from Sampath. Nasser chips in with a fine show.

The screenplay involves only a house, but cameraman Rathnavelu has done a worthy job, especially with the lighting. Antony's editing enhances the proceedings, while Sandip Howta's re-recording contributes in a big way.
