Enticing products on display: At the Orissa Crafts Mela
The various shapes formed by Nature and its incredible palette of colours are the focus of the Orissa Craft Mela now on at C.P. Arts Centre, 1 Eldams Road, Alwarpet.
Handicrafts and textiles from various regions of the country are also on display.
The changing profile of ikats from Sambalpur or Bomkai are reflected in clothes where traditional body and border ( featuring animal and tribal motifs) combine with softer shades. Also on view are delicately painted patachitra panels on tussar, painted palm leaf wall hangings and cards. The iron products from Bastar are eye-catching.
Traditional items
Traditional farm implements, ceremonial horse swings and diyas form the iron craft repertoire. Then there are birds and animal-carved diyasand candle stands handcrafted by tribals.
Saura tribal paintings are exhibited for the first time in Chennai. Rajasthan’s block printed bed linen, Pochampalli ikat saris and terracotta items from West Bengal are among the other attractive products at the Crafts Mela, which is a programme for rural and tribal artisans organised by Arts and Crafts Exposition, a leading Craft NGO in Chennai. The Mela concludes on May 30.
