Using art to drive in sense

Campaign Against Drunken Driving, is organising an art show to raise funds

This is art for cause’s sake. Campaign Against Drunken Driving (CADD), a Delhi-based non-profit organisation, is arranging an art show of young artist Dhaneshwar Shah in New Delhi from this Friday. The four-day solo show, called 17. is to suppo rt CADD’s projects against drunken driving.

All of 28, Shah, who is holding his third solo show for the cause, has made as many as 17 works (and so the name of the exhibition) to raise funds for a public interest short film, “In Support of Alcohol Wrong Fuel for Driving” made by CADD.

The film is conceptualised to help the masses make an informed and intelligent choice about driving sober by sensitising the viewer about the consequences of driving drunk.

Shah, who says his art is inspired by his surroundings and objects of everyday living, says, “Getting involved with CADD projects is one of the most satisfying decisions of my life as I know that drunken driving is taking lives across India and if I am able to contribute to saving these lives through my art I would be hugely gratified.”

Talking about the gravity of the cause, Prince Singhal, the man behind CADD, says, “With the rising number of deaths due to drunken driving it will soon become the third largest cause affecting the Indian masses after AIDS and Cancer, and we need to take immediate action to put an end to these gruesome deaths on our roads.” He says CADD had been playing a role towards spreading the message of sober driving over the past half a decade through awareness campaigns and legislative amendments. Singhal says he would involve “some of the best experts” for the film.

Meanwhile, the exhibition will take off with a special preview at India Habitat Centre this Friday featuring actor Rahul Roy as its special invitee.

The art show will be on view at IHC’s Open Palm Court Gallery till August 6. The timings are from 11 am till 8 pm.
