Sumadhura Kalaniketan’s comedy playlets competition for the 12th year in a row, drew packed houses for three days at Vijayawada. Eight playlets picked from 35 entries, calibrated the dissolved energy of the T.V. addicted housewives. Sanakaraman
chi Parthasarathi’s playlet Pujaku Velayara subjected a set of such hapless men to ramble. Peppy dialogues with puns, supported the comic situations. Presented by Vighneswara Art Theatre, Vijayawada, it was directed by P.Brahmana
nda Rao winning the jury’s special prize.
In Tella Cheekati, the woman has an almost a pathetic obsession for viewing serials. She imbibes the lingo of the titles and shares it with her neighbour. It proves traumatic for the husband, but the viewers were left holding their
bellies with laughter. Written by Paramatmuni, directed by Malladi Sivannarayana and performed by Kala Varshini,Hyderabad it was adjudged the second best playlet.
Mega Serial had a hackneyed theme where a rich father enactshis own death by hiring a damsel to disinherit his son living abroad. The plot fails as it turns out that the damsel is his son’s sweetheart. The play was penned by G. S
. Rama Rao. Directed by N. Gangadhar, it was presented by Janaranjani cultural association, Vijayawada.
Bandhumitrula Abinandanalato by K.Chinnikrishna and directed by Gokaraju Ramana of Chalam productions of Visakhapatnam had sparkling wit. Two uncles of the bride initially bid for the bridegroom with big offers, but yield to the wishes
of the young man’s choice. Yelakula Apparao as one of the uncles was quite impressive. The set was well designed to show the kitchen through the living room.
Vankara Tinkara So by K. Prabhakara Rao was on a modern servant maid saving a child who has been poisoned in an apartment. It was produced by Navayuga Arts of Vizianagaram and directed by Sontineni Kishore.
The rule and spread of the cellphone was expansive. The despotic nature of the gadget was shown as omnipotent. Helpline could be a mistress causing havoc for a family. Karnapisachi written by Valleti Kulasekhar ha
d some reassuring ideas of humour into the conventional wisdom of cell-economics: “You could virtually feed the needy of the country with the cost of extra talk time.” Directed by Sammeta Gandhi, the play was presented by B.D.L. Cultural committee of Hyderabad to win the best prize.
Ounu Valliddaru Kasthapaddaru was on the make-believe world of subsitutes for an eloping bride and hired suitor. A familiar baggage of humour miming the popular film songs supported the streak of misadventure, planned by the match make
rs. The play was written by Veerla Vara Prasad and directed by Bhaskar Venigalla. It was presented by Kalamanjari, Vijayawada.
Of all the playlets Aleledu Chululedu written by Malladi Ravikiran had some comprehension of structure and drama, essential for a comedy. The son of a rich jailer wants to wed girl with speaking disability. He is supported by his
pampering mother much to the discomfiture of the father. A scrutiny of the ration card of the jailer by an officer creates the situation for a few hilarious exchanges. The play, directed by K.V. Balaramamurthy, was presented by Malladi Creations of Hyderabad.
As an exbition playlet, members of Sumadhura Kalaniketan staged Sunaka Sapam written by Madugula Rama Krishna on the perception of a son-in-law not to sleep on a cot.
