Exhibitions across the city have ushered in the festive season with an assortment of handicrafts, weaves and textiles.
Orissa’s ‘Craft Utsav,’ organised by ACE, an NGO, has a fascinating cross-section of products. The sambalpuri, bomkai and Cuttack saris, dupattas and yardage showcase ikat at its best. They come in traditional and tribal designs, vibrant colours and arresting combinations.
The typical woven borders are in tussar, cotton and pure silk saris.
For buyers hunting for gifts, it is a treasure house. The dhokra work bells, lamp and lampstands are exquisitely conceived.
Then there are Pipli work (appliqué) garden umbrellas, fans and canopies. There are also granite, soapstone and chlorite sculptures. These intricately carved statues come in varying sizes. The patachitra paintings in vegetable dyes depict scenes from the Epics. Adding an exotic touch are the palm leaf wall hangings and the smoothly polished horn combs, penstands and vases.
The ‘Craft Utsav,’ which opens today, will go on till September 9 at No.1 Eldams Road, Alwarpet.
Kalamkari clothes
Tanirika, an all-women’s craft production group from Andhra Pradesh, showcases kalamkari saris and wraparound skirts, tops and so on in typical floral machilipatnam motifs.
The affordable products are in vegetable colours and meld good craftsmanship with a contemporary style. This one is on till September 15 at No. 16, Rajabather Street (behind Geretha Café), Pondy Bazaar, T.Nagar.
Shrujan’s products
At Ashaara’s, 18 and 20 Bheemana Garden Road, Raja Annamalaipuram, on show are Shrujan’s handbags, belts and wall hangings that celebrate the exquisite rabari embroidery.
The work is a harmonious melange of muted colours, designer concepts and good craftsmanship.
Also available are designer lac bangles encrusted with semi-precious stones and glass; glitzy cotton, chiffon and georgette couture tops, saris and dresses embellished with embroidery or zari work.
