Sashti festival
“Arunagirinathar blazed a new trail not only in the composition of a unique gamut of devotional lyric but also in setting the songs to an amazing variety of talas.
He was the unsurpassed exponent of the tala system.” — T S Parthasarathi.
Arunagirinathar is said to have composed nearly 16,000 songs of which only 1300 have been traced.
Murugan Thiruvarut Sangam has been conducting the Skanda Sashti festival for the 54 years in succession.
Aruangiri’s Thirupugazh, Kandaralangaram, and Kandaranubudhi were rendered both by individual singers as concerts and by various groups of singers.
The events also included Veda Parayanam and lectures that explained the meaning and context of Thiruppugazh.
A souvenir and ‘Thirupugazh Thirattu,’ a collection of Thiruppugazh songs with their detailed exposition,’ was also released during the festival which was held at The Fund Kalyana Mandapam (Triplicane).
