Cultural face of a politician

Former Orissa Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang showed his mastery over musical instruments.

Coinciding with the Pradhamaashtami of the month of Margasira during which the birth of the first child in the family is celebrated by Oriya people, a function was organised by the socio-cultural association, Utkal Sanskruthika Samaj (USS) in its au ditorium last Saturday. The eighth edition of its annual magazine Arunima was released by chief guest, former Chief Minister of Orissa Giridhar Gamang.

Gamang, himself a writer and poet, is also a dhampo, Sarangi, tumuru and Chengu maestro. Releasing the magazine, he felicitated members of the editorial board of the magazine, noted writer Punyaprabha Devi, Meera Chowdary and R.P. Sahoo along with the Editor-in-Chief Neena Dash. While noted exponent of Odissi Pranathi Mishra presented citation to Gamang, secretary of the Samaj S.K. Basanthia proposed a vote of thanks. President of the USS P.K. Dash was in the chair.

A cultural show followed the felicitation function, during which a patriotic song was rendered by Swapna, Babitha, Reeka, Sanexi and Priya.

sThe dances were presented by Sulagna, Harshitha, Akanshya, Sheetal, Iswarya and seven-year old Neeharika. Neeharika, (disciple of Pranathi Mishra) stole the show by her movements and facial expressions like a professional.

Pibare Ramarasam

Visakha Music and Dance Academy presented a grand programme of devotional music constituted of about a dozen lyrics of Bhadrachala Ramadas and two each of Annamacharya and Thyagaraja. Noted carnatic vocalist Malladi Suribabu besides K. Seshulatha of Hyderabad, G. Sarada Subrahmanyam, V. Lalitha Chandrasekhar and M. Sridevi along with Dwaram V.K.G. Thaygaraju, Chaitanya brothers V.V. Sarma and B. Krishnamachari of Visakhapatnam rendered them in commendable synchrony with intense intoning.

G. Annajirao and K.V.S. Prasad on violin, M. Sridhar on mridangam, A. Anand on tabla and G. Venakatesh on morsing lent excellent support. While Suribabu conducted music Perala Balamurali Krishna went exquisitely poetic compering the programme.
