A multi-faceted rendition

A multi-language rendition of devotional songs appealed all.

Manasa Art Theatres held a devotional music programme by N. Ch.Thirumala Devi, a rising star in devotional renditions at Thygaraya Gana Sabha’s mini A.C. theatre. She rendered a selection of songs from different languages with good taste and co mpositions of high calibre. She began with Kannada compositions Jaganmohanane Krishna of Purandara Dasa in Shanmukhapriya and Enthakarunaye Taye Kaveri in Valaji written by Lakshmi Setolpadi that was preceded by a sloka on river Kaveri. It was followed by another Kannada number Toogire Rayara Togire Guru Gala in Ananda Bhairavi written by Guru Jagannatha Vithala.

She chose two traditional numbers in Malayalam - Chitti Mandaram Tulasi in Ananda Bhairavi and Sabari Malayil Tanga Suryodayam also in Ananda Bhairavi. If she sang a Meera bhajan Pyare Darshan Deejyo, in Sanskrit, she lent her voice to Raghavendra Tava Charanam Bhajami in Mand, written in Sanskrit by Vyasa Tatvagna Teertha. In Telugu, she chose to render a composition of Anamacharya Yentakalamu Kada, set to music by Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sarma in Sriragam. In Punjabi, she chose Ram Simar, a song written by the 9th guru of Sikhs Theg Bahadur and it received good response.

The Gujarati number was the famous Vaishnava Janatho of Narasimha Mehta set in Khamas and the one popularised by Subbulakshmi brought back memories of Gandhiji’s meetings that never went without the rendition of this particular song. Two songs from Marathi Pradhama Tula Vandito Kripala in Yaman of Santaram Gavkar and another of Santh Tukaram Hare Panduranga in Yaman were quite pleasing. Mail medo Vilayadam in Tamil of Sattur Tarpagam in raga Vasanthi and then a Sanskrit Maithri Bhajata Akhila concluded the show. S.Venugopal on violin and K.Srinivasa Rao on tabla accompanied her. The tabla was chosen to suit the bhajans in both Carnatic and Hindustani music. Vocalist Thirumala Devi took every care to spell the words in these various languages correctly and her rendition was mellifluous carrying devotional appeal.
