Taking the rough with the smooth is the norm for Sumant.

Standing 6-foot plus and sporting a small smile, Sumant carries himself deliberately. He doesn’t walk; he saunters. He speaks with an intensity, mulling the words while locking his eyes on you. He looks all of his 30 years, if not more. Over a
cuppa at his office in Annapurna, the actor talks about his bonding with his family and friends.
“I’m altogether a different person when the camera rolls but I stiffen up at regular press conferences and TV interviews, it shows and I think it’s just a personality trait. My grandpa keeps asking me as to why I don’t interact, why I don’t attend functions. I don’t mind small get-togethers but big gatherings, I go and stand in a corner. When I flash that plastic smile, nenu dorikipothanu. I have the most artificial smile in the world and believe me socialising is not my cup of tea, I can’t do it even if it means a small degree,” he says.
But does he have friends and stays in touch with them? “Oh yes,” says the soft-spoken actor. “My closest friend is Vikram (K. Raghavendra Rao’s son-in-law) whom I’ve known since I was a year old. I’m in touch with my pals in the U.S. I’m not into Orkut but joined the Facebook recently, that too because my friends keep posting their family pictures. Even then they complain that I’m in a private mode. My uncle Nagarjuna’s friends are mine too. I grew up seeing them. I like going out with my close circle to a place that is less crowded.”
Sumant has been linked with Kamalini Mukherjee after his divorce, ask him about it, he rubbishes it as a rumour. He adds, “You just know when someone is there for you, and honestly since my divorce I haven’t been seeing anyone. After Godavari the whole thing about me and Kamalini must have started because Shekar, me and Kamalini have gone out for dinner thrice and it must have been convenient to arrive at the conclusion."
But what went wrong with Kirti Reddy? He says choosing his words carefully, “I won’t like to discuss my divorce because it involves two people, I still care a lot for her and moreover I am very close to her family. But yes I’m a very eligible bachelor, I’m not really looking forward to getting married but at the same time I’m not resisting any woman in my life, it will happen when it has to.”
On the career front, things are definitely perking up. There are reports that he is going to do a film with an ad film maker from the US and his upcoming Pourudu is gathering a good talk. Sumant says, “I’ve finalised one film and will disclose the info once Pourudu is out. But lately I’m asking people to give me a bound script in either Telugu or English. Personally I like things down on paper. My grandpa says story sitting is the hardest thing for an actor not the acting.”
Talking about the ups and downs in his career the actor says, “There was a low patch before Satyam, I wasn’t really down then and after Gowri and Godavari there is no exultation. I’m on a limited lows and highs. You will never see me really sad or happy.”
Sumant says he’s in great place, he has his family, friends and lots of work happening.
At the moment there is only positivity – because he chooses to look at it that way…
