Music festival

The Aananda Festival will be a weeklong one

The third edition of the Aanandaa Festival will be held from January 13 to 19 at the Gayana Samaja. This unique festival will feature seven eminent composers of the Carnatic music world including Purandara Dasa, Syama Sastry, Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy D eekshitar, Swati Tirunal, Muthaiah Bhagavathar and Mysore Vasudevachar.

On January 13, there will be a Bharatanatya recital by Janani Iyer, followed by compositions of Thyagaraja by Mandolin Srinivas with H. K. Venkataram (violin). Shertalai Ananthakrishnan (mrudangam) and E.M. Subramanian (ghatam) starting 5 p.m. On January 14, there will be a morning session starting 10 a.m. featuring compositions of Mysore Vasudevachar in a vocal concert by R.K. Srikantan with vocal support by Rudrapatnam S. Ramakanth, M.A. Sundareshwaran (violin), Srimushnam Ramarao (mrudangam) and G.S. Ramanujam (ghatam).

In the evening concert starting 6.30 p.m, compositions of Syama Sastri will be performed in a vocal concert by Nithyashree Mahadevan with M.A. Krishnaswamy (violin), P. Sathish Kumar (mrudangam). On January 15, at 6.30 p.m. there will be a Trio Concert featuring seven composers of the festival - H.K. Venkataram (violin) Anand (veena) and G. Ravi Kiran (flute) with Srimushnam Rajarao (mrudangam) and H.S. Sudheendra (mrudangam).

On January 16, at 6.30 p.m., there will be a vocal concert on the compositions of Harikeshanallur Muthaiah Bhagavathar by Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan with V.V. Ravi (violin), Guruvayoor Dorai (mridanga) and N. Amrith (khanjira). On January 17 at 6.30 p.m. compositions of Purandara Dasa will be rendered in a vocal concert by Saralaya Sisters with V.V.S Murari (violin) Poongulam Subramanian (mridangam) and G. Guruprasanna (khanjira).

On January 18 at 6.30 p.m. compositions of Swati Tirunal will be performed in a vocal concert by Manadi Brothers, Kannan (violin) Sankaran (mridangam) and Vaikom Gopalakrishnan (ghatam).

On Jaunuary 19 at 5 p.m, a Bharatanatya Ensemble: A Mudraka Foundation Presentation choreographed by Guru Minal Prabhu will be performed by Ponnamma Devaiah, Anant Nagarai, Janani Iyer, Rohini and Supriya Patankar. At 6.30 p.m. compositions of Muthuswamy Dikshitar will be presented in a vocal concert by T.M. Krishna, with H.K. Venkataram (violin) and Trichy Sankaran (mridangam). Admission is free.

A competition has been organised for those under the age of 25 to research on the life and times of the composers being featured, presenting their perspective. The best entry would be judged by an eminent panel of musicians and the award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and commendation for each of the seven composers. The award winner will also present the work before the relevant concert featuring the composer. Those seeking to participate in the competition need to register on the Aanandaa Foundation website.

A scholarship is also being announced to match deserving students with carefully chosen gurus to undertake a five year program. During this period all expenses related to the grooming of the student, not just from a music perspective but also life skills will be undertaken by the foundation.
