oh! you Jagapathi Babu, Mamatha Mohan Das starrer ‘Homam’ is slated for next month.
Does K. Chakravarthi ring a bell? No. Change the initial to JD, the character he has played in that trendsetter, Shiva and one instantly will have the Oh! expression. Actor-turned-filmmaker J.D. Chakravarthi is shooting for Homam at the Nizam College. Among the principle actors lined up for the day’s shoot include the protagonist Jagapathi Babu, Mamatha Mohan Das, ‘Dubbing’ Janaki and of course Chakravarthi who plays the antagonist. The other antagonists are Mahesh Manjrekar and Pradeep Rawat.
Silence rules the place as the director standing among the actors as part of the scene calls for the shot. Bharani K. Dharan’s camera rolls to capture the players’ emotions. By the scene it is evident that Janaki whom Chakravarthi considers a ‘fantastic actress’ enacts Jagapathi Babu’s mother. The atmosphere smells of a hospital but it has a campus backdrop too. As we probe the air is cleared. JD in fact tried for permission to shoot the scenes at the Osmania Medical College and Hospital. But now that the University has stopped giving permissions for film shoots at the campus so he is shooting it at the Nizam College. Later at the editing table to create that authentic feel to his script, he will do a kind of a ‘cheating’ (he laughs while saying this) by matching the scene with the Osmania Hospital to give an impression as if they were shot there. In cine parlance it is a kind of a recreation of the original location at the avid table.
Jagapathi Babu looked tense. His persona reminded us of his earlier hit, Gayam. He even sports six pack abs. An undercover agent, Jagapathi Babu seems to enjoy his role as he often said that he loves to play a Gayam kind of character one more time. That was made by Ram Gopal Varma and now his prodigy is taking him back to the action hero slot. After the first block in the scene in which the lead actors express concern at the elderly lady (Janaki) and after a few minutes recess for the camera to shift to another position, the shoot commenced. Chakravarthi says something to the actors. Mamatha Mohan Das looks cute in a trendy outfit and the singer croons too for one of the five songs composed by Nitin Raikwar. Janaki is a veteran at playing the mother with a display of subdued emotions.
The chemistry seems to be working perfectly between Jagapathi Babu and JD. That makes things light on the sets. Except for the filming of a special song probably on Sakshi Sivanand (guest appearance) the movie’s shooting and the simultaneous post production work is coming to a close. Homam is set to release in April.
