A cardiac surgeon uses wicked ways to become a health minister
Verbal drama A scene from the play Satyakameshti.
Rasaranjani staged the play Satya Kameshti at Thyagaraya Gana Sabha last week after a long gap. Lord Dasaratha performed putra kameshti, an yagna to have sons. Here in Satya Kamesthi, truth is born out of this modern Yagna.
It was a prolonged act with five characters andwas in fact a study of the character of a cardiac surgeon Dr.Dinkar., who becomes minister by adopting foul methods. .
The doctor indulges in soul-searching and recalls his inhuman acts - first to win the highest medical award – ‘Dhanwantari Award’ but uses the award money to settle loans and using his popularity even becomes a Health minister! Of the four important roles, more voluble was that of Dinakar’s Private Secretary Dr.Rao.
He is the person who masterminds the drama of Dinakar’s changing fortunes. As the curtain opens we watch a `Meet the people’ programme organised by the doctor-turned-minister Dinkar. A old human rights activist `Manishi’ (played by B. Narayana) arrives there with his journalist wife Aruna (Srilakshmi). Manishi demands the minister to resign for his wicked ways. Even when Aruna exposes Dinakar’s dirty act, she is thrown out of her job.
The play ends with Dinkar submitting to his conscience and resigning. . This being a well-rehearsed production, all the artistes excelled in their roles. B.Narayana as the old man and Mohan Senapathi as Dr.Rao were impressive. Srilakshmi as Aruna too proved an actress with good diction. The play being mostly a verbal drama, it needed little music support.
K.Nataraj as Dr.Dinakar had a difficult role since he had to be silent and show only the guilty reaction.
