It is Brahmotsavam time at the Rajagopalswamy temple of Mannargudi (also called Champakaranya kshetram). The image of the presiding deity is considered to be one of the most beautiful found in temples.
The sprawling temple was built in granite by Kulothunga Chola and was named after him as Kulothunga Chola Vinnagaram.
In the 16th century, the Nayak kings contributed a lot towards the development of the temple.
Panguni Brahmotsavam at the temple began on March 25. The Lord will be taken out in a procession on different vahanams. Garuda sevai is on April 5 and Vennaithazhi Utsavam, on April 9. A unique feature of this Brahmotsavam is that each day festival is done as Mandagapadi by people belonging to various castes.
Mahasamprokshanam of this temple is due this year. It was held 12 years back in March 1995. The HR and CE department has submitted a proposal for Rs. 1.08 crore to the Government for taking up the renovation. Donations may be sent to the Executive Officer, Sri Rajagopalaswamy temple, Mannargudi, Tiruvarur district.
