This is with reference to the article, ‘Homage to Tyagaraja’ (Friday Review, March 21) The music critic has titled the kriti in Kharaharapriya sung by Hyderabad Brothers as ‘Chitra Ratnamaya’. The pallavi starts with ‘Mitribhagyame’.

‘Mitri’ has no meaning by itself in the context. When combined with ‘Sau’ at the end of anupallavi and charanam, it refers to Lakshmana (‘Saumitri’). This is one of the kritis where it is appropriate to start singing a song with anupallavi. Thus Hyderabad Brothers were right in their start. MS used to sing the kriti but she always started with the pallavi.

A. Seshan,
Chennai.
