In guru’s memory

SISHYAS, a trust (9841882883) in memory of the late Madurai S. Vaidyanathan, is observing the veteran’s second anniversary by conducting a music festival on April 5 and 6 at Vasantha Mantapam, Chromepet.

Born in Alappuzha, Kerala, in 1927, Vaidyanathan learnt Carnatic music from Uma Maheswara Bhagavathar and Bagavatiswara Bahgavathar. Later, he emulated the GNB style of singing. Devoted to Tyagaraja, Vaidyanathan appeared as the saint composer in the play, ‘Life of Tyagaraja’ held at R.R.Sabha, Kolkata, in 1955. In appreciation, Madurai Mani Iyer presented him a gold medal. Vaidyanathan could sing for three hours even at the age of 80. He passed away on March 13, 2006.
