Ocean in concert

It’s different The members of Indian Ocean

Indian Ocean has come up with a live concert DVD. The members – Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty, Rahul Ram and Amit Kilam were here in Delhi at the India Habitat Centre at the launch. Called ‘Indian Ocean Live in Delhi’ Susmit Sen, whose self stylised guitar is considered to be the basis of Indian Ocean’s unique sound, said, “Amit’s idea of recording it live got everyone’s support and here it is before all to enjoy the two hour jazzy performance by the band at Garden of Five Senses.” Susmit has often been noticed for the serenity with which he plays the guitar and is called the ‘sage’ by the fellow members. “The audience is the source of our energy and we all believe we are best on stage,” he added. Amit Kilam, the drummer of the band who also contributes the vocals, revealed he goes blank on stage, “I cannot think of anything, I’m there, doing my job.”

The DVD has eleven songs including “Boll Weevil” (Desert Rain), “Kandisa”, “Jhini”, “Melancholy Ecstasy” ( one of the band’s first compositions) and “Bandeh” (Black Friday). “We are doing a few more songs for Bollywood movies. There’s Shoonya, Hulla, and for Bhoomi we have done seven songs,” shared Rahul Ram who plays the bass guitar and powers the performances with his vocals.

Ask them what lies ahead and Rahul said there’s a list of concerts to be held in Toronto, Seattle, San Diego. There’s also a documentary in the pipeline capturing the personal details of the members and making of the band. Directed by Jaideep Verma, the short film will be released in December. “We are not stars, we are planets!” laughed out Asheem who handles the vocal duties, tabla and percussions for the band.

Looking back at their earlier performances – the good and the bad ones – the fusion music group of ‘self taught’ musicians said they believe in learning through experiences and experiments. “It is easier for us to break the rules!,” they expressed in unison.
