  • Buddhadeb requests Tata to restart work at Singur

    Kolkata (PTI): West Bengal Chief MinisterBuddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday requested Tata group chairmanRatan Tata to restart work at its Singur project and assuredhim of all help by the State administration.

    "The Chief Minister has written to Tata requesting himto restart work at the Nano plant at Singur," IndustryMinister Nirupam Sen told reporters in Kolkata.

    In his letter, Bhattacharjee promised to extend allhelp and cooperation to the Tatas.

    Sen said the people of Singur and the State wanted theTata project to happen. On speculation that the Tatas might shift theirproject from the State, Sen said the company had not yet takenthe decision.Sen said the State government would give necessarysecurity to the Tata Motors. "There might be some people who were creatingproblems but that is not the voice of all the people and we want toconvey it to the Tatas," he said.

    The State Cabinet had on Thursday appealed to the Tatasnot to withdraw the Nano project from Singur andassured them of all help and cooperation for its implementation.

    The Cabinet in a statement urged the opposition partiesto accept the rehabilitation package offered to land losers inSingur and cooperate in the implementation of the project.

    Tata Motors had suspended work in the Singur plantsince August 29 following agitation by the TrinamoolCongress-led opposition.
