Digital seismographs to be installed for real-time data: Govt

New Delhi, March 10. (PTI): Broadband digital seismographs will be installed across the country to collect real-time data on earthquakes even below three on the Richter scale to ensure that concerned authorities remain informed about all types of tremors, the Government told the Lok Sabha on Friday.

The State Governments and Union Territories would be also asked to amend municipal by-laws for construction of quake-resistant buildings and make their application mandatory, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said during Question Hour.

As many as 177 digital seismographs will be installed under the 11th five-year plan at a cost of Rs 88 crore for collection of real-time data that would help a lot in analysing underground seismic activities and record tremors even below three on the Richter scale, he said.

Replying to queries on technology that could help give some kind of indications about quakes, Sibal said "at present there is no equipment available that can predict a tremor.

"We are investing in technology and may be 5 to 10 years down the line, one will be able to get some kind of an idea about possibility of quakes after analysing various data including activities in the atmosphere and movements in oceans," he said.

Sibal said, steps were being taken to bring sophisticated technology available in Iceland on measuring seismic activities.
