Jet aircraft returns with damaged tyre

Kolkata, July. 13 (PTI): A Port Blair-bound Jet Airways flight with 164 passengers on board returned to Kolkata after being told by airport authorities here not to land at Port Blair with damaged tyre this morning.

Sources in the NSC Bose international airport here said that the Airports Authority of India and the Air Traffic Control asked the Jet Airways (9W 629) aircraft to return to Kolkata after they found some parts of tyres lying on the runway.

The plane had nearly reached Port Blair when it was asked by the AAI and ATC not to land there for security reasons and turn back to Kolkata from where it had taken off.

The sources said that the pilot was asked to perform low flypast operation over the NSC Bose international airport so that the condition of the wheel could be monitored and examined by aviation experts and DGCA, AAI and ATC officials.

After the aircraft landed safely at the NSC Bose airport. a thorough inspection revealed that some layers of the aircraft's undercarriage tyre were missing.

The Jet Airways authority was asked to immediately repair the damaged tyre before its further use.

The authorities here also issued instructions to all the flights that had taken off from here to check tyres of their respective aircraft for security purposes.
