Amarnath pilgrimage resumes from Baltal and Nunwan
Srinagar (PTI): The annual Amarnath yatra resumed this morning with nearly 10,000 pilgrims leaving the base camps of Baltal and Nunwan for the cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas a day after it was suspended due to inclement weather.
The yatra commenced from both the routes - Baltal in Ganderbal district and Nunwan in Anantnag district, official sources said.
They said 8,556 pilgrims comprising 1,773 women, 565 children and 185 sadhus were allowed to proceed from Baltal base camp, while a batch of 1,415 pilgrims left Nunwan to pay obeisance at the cave shrine.
The yatra was suspended from both the routes yesterday after the cave and its adjoining areas experienced three inches of snowfall, while the incessant rains triggered landslides at Rail Pathri and other places, rendering the twin tracks unsafe.
The landslides were cleared yesterday but no pilgrim was allowed to proceed from Baltal and Nunwan towards the shrine as a precautionary measure.
So far over 1.96 lakh pilgrims have visited the shrine since the commencement of the yatra on June 15, they said.
