TN: TNAU colleges, hostels closed
Coimbatore, (PTI): The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Thursday shut down all its constituent colleges in the state as the students continued their agitation demanding jobs for all the graduates.
TNAU Registrar, P Santhanakrishnan, said in a communique that all the colleges under the University would be closed down indefinitely from Thursday evening.
The closure until further orders was due to the on-going relay hunger strike by the students, he said.
Hostels also would not be functioning from Friday, and students have been instructed to vacate them immediately, he said.
Meanwhile, agitating students sought Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's intervention in the issue after their talks with state Agricultural Minister, Veerapandi S Arumugham, failed. The minister wanted the students to end the strike before starting negotiations.
Talking to reporters, representatives of the students, who had met Arumugham on Wednesday at Chennai, said that they were hurt by the 'behaviour' of the minister.
Arumugham had reportedly told the students that the Goverment was not responsible to provide jobs to all students as they had joined the courses on their own.
The students said they would intensify their agitation and that the course of action would be decided later at a meeting.
