Scribes march to assembly protesting attack on TV crew

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): Journalists on wednesday took out an assembly march here protesting the delay in taking action against the culprits behind the attack on the crew of a leading television channel while reporting "unsafe conditions" of a granite quarry a fortnight ago.

Joining the state-wide protests called by Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), media fraternity here also held meetings in all the districts protesting the delay in arresting the real culprits who masterminded the attack.

Inaugurating the assembly march here, state Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy wanted the LDF government to explain as to why it is shying away from issuing clear orders to the police to arrest the masterminds behind the assault. The march was addressed by legislators V Sivan Kutty, N Aniruddhan, V Surendran Pillai, BJP leader M S Kumar, KUWJ leaders C Gourdiasan Nair and K Kunhikannan and Kerala Newspaper Employees Federation leader K N Balagopal.

A news crew from Asianet was severely beaten up by a group of unidentified persons while shooting the unsafe conditions of a granite quarry at Pattimattam in Ernakulam district two weeks back.

The shooting was done in the wake of increasing incidence of quarries turning into death traps.
