Maharashtra to regulate fee structure in private colleges

Mumbai (PTI): Maharashtra Government is contemplating setting up a nodal regulatory authority to deal with the admission process and fee structure in medical and engineering institutions, including private colleges, in the state.

"The draft has been completed and soon it will come to cabinet for the discussion. Once approved from the cabinet it will be presented in the Assembly," Principle Secretary, Medical Education Amitabh Chandra told PTI.

The regulatory authority will deal with admission process and fee structure. It will also make some uniform rules for the colleges, Chandra said.

"The idea of having a regulatory authority is to avoid unnecessary fee hike by the private colleges later in the year and have some common rules and regulations to be followed by them. Even the admission process creates problems every year in the state and many cases are still pending before the court," the secretary added.

The authority will also bring some accountability in the admission process and avoid any controversies during the same, the secretary said adding the authority can even penalise private collages for not following rules enacted by the State Government.

Its not only the admission and fee hike but the state is also thinking to conduct single CET exam for both faculty students through the authority. Currently, there are two separate exams for medical and one exam for engineering being held every year, he added.
