European Commission approves HP's $13.9 bn purchase of EDS

PALO ALTO, California (AP): Hewlett-Packard said the European Commission had approved its planned acquisition of Electronic Data Systems without conditions.

Hewlett-Packard Co. also said Friday it had agreed to settle five shareholder lawsuits related to the buyout. As part of the settlement, the deal will not close before Aug. 18.

Hewlett-Packard, which is based in Palo Alto, plans to buy technology services company Electronic Data Systems Corp. for about $13.9 billion.

The deal has already passed a regulatory waiting period in the U.S. without a request for more information by the Justice Department or the Federal Trade Commission.
