Celebrations as Tendulkar break's Lara's record

Mohali (PTI): Despite a bright sun shine, fire crackers sparkled the skyline at PCA stadium here on Fria day which erupted in joy as Sachin Tendulkar surpassed Brian Lara's record to become the highest run getter in the Test cricket.

The master batsman, who required 15 runs to overcome Lara's record before the Mohali Test, hit Aussie debutant Peter Siddle and got those remaining two runs by guiding one to third man.

As the PCA erupted into joy and spectators, whose presence was thin on Friday, stood up and congratulated the champion.

The crackers continued to burst for five minutes and smoke filled the sky on the north pavilion side.

India's former captain Sourav Ganguly, who was batting on the other end went up to Sachin and congratulated him and so did the Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and his teammates.

The 35-year-old Tendulkar raised his bat and held his head towards the sky as if to thank the almighty.
