International TV channel launched in Shanghai
Beijing (PTI): An international TV channel, the first foreign language television channel not operated by the state-run CCTV, was on Tuesday launched in China's economic hub Shanghai.
The International Channel Shanghai (ICS), run by the Shanghai Media Group (SMG), broadcasts in English and Japanese with Chinese captions.
ICS would help serve the 2010 World Expo, to be held here, to showcase Shanghai's "open image", Jiao Yang, the city government spokesman said, adding it would also benefit foreign nationals living and working here, according to official Xinhua news agency.
Shanghai has 150,000 foreign residents with 6 million foreign tourist arrivals every year. During the World Expo, the number of visitors is expected to reach 70 million, including domestic tourists.
The ICS programmes, covering news, information, fashion, entertainment, foreign TV shows and movies, would be aired for 19 hours a day, which can also be watched by about 4.4 million Internet subscribers in Shanghai on their computers through Internet Protocol Television.
CCTV operates channels in English, French and Spanish across China.
